Erwiana: Justice for All follows the story of Erwiana Sulistyaningsih, a young ambitious migrant domestic worker from East Java Indonesia. Like so many others, Erwiana was forced to leave her home in order to move to Hong Kong in the pursuit of a better life for her family. Our story follows the unprecedented trial of the accused abuser, which turned the world’s eyes on Hong Kong.

We see the ignorance of a society, the greed of their home countries and the “blind eye of a government” all in the pursuit of “cheap labor”. Meet the people who risk it all to stand up for those who cannot. Hear from the mouths of the few courageous enough to share their experiences through tearful eyes and hopeful spirits.

About the director

Gabriel McKail is a Mexican/American documentary filmmaker based in Hong Kong. Originally from a poor immigrant community in Los Angeles, he was exposed to police brutality, racism, and gang violence at a very young age. He believes that being exposed to these sorts of injustices is what influenced him to tell stories about people who suffer at the hands of authority.

In 2010 Gabriel arrived in Hong Kong and immediately noticed the ill treatment of migrant domestic workers. It was at that time that he heard stories of physical and verbal abuse at the hands of their employers.

In Erwiana: Justice for All, Gabriel hopes that people will watch and see first hand what migrant domestic workers must endure to support their families back home.
