Coming of age: Sociology through the generations
Hosted by HKU Sociology.
Conference theme
In recognition of the development of sociology in the Hong Kong–Asia region over the past half century, we are pleased to announce Coming of age: Sociology through the generations as this year’s annual conference theme.
The theme of the conference – ‘coming of age’ – speaks to the production of sociological knowledge through the generations and in particular, the changing social context of which knowledge is produced in sociology. Shifting theoretical paradigms, new innovations in methodologies, along with a changing academic culture give rise to the need to explore the connections and disconnections between generations of sociologists and sociological knowledge production.
What are the sociological theories that have changed and evolved over the years? How is sociological knowledge produced and taught through out the years in Hong Kong and beyond? Is there a “constant” in sociological ideas despite rapid and global change? What impact does an increasingly rigorous academic system and culture have on sociology students and educators?
We encourage authors to reflect on their specific areas or research within sociology, with a critical lens on how their research fits within the wider scope and breadth of sociological debates and topics bridging generations and across the global north and south divide. Have the theoretical ideas, methods, and questions changed? What do these changes reflect – broader changes in societies, academic culture?
Although the theme of the conference is on the production of sociological knowledge through the generations, we also welcome submissions from a wide range of topics, for example:
- Class and social stratification
- Deviance and crime
- Education
- Gender and sexuality
- Global inequality
- Marriage and family
- Media and culture
- Migration
- Religion
- Social movement
- Work and employment
