Recreating Our Cities

In the 21st century the media, cultural and creative industries have played a significant role in the global economy. This is especially true in Hong Kong and various booming Asian cities where local governments are using their best endeavors to position and brand themselves as world cities particularly through this vibrant sector. At the same time, many of our most basic ideological beliefs about who we are and how we relate to the world are increasingly rearticulated by contesting discourses. The challenges of anchoring our identities and recreating our cities have become a prime vocation for many.

To meet the strong demand among creative talents to participate in developing visions and strategies for building a sustainable city and for social development, Department of Sociology of The University of Hong Kong is now offering a cutting-edge part-time/ full-time program leading to a Master of Social Sciences in Media, Culture and Creative Cities [MSocSc (MCCC)]. It has been designed to provide both graduate students and those active in the creative industries an opportunity to dissect media and culture in different urban milieux using evidence-based approaches from the social sciences to explore the evolving roles of media, technology and creativity in shaping our contemporary culture and society.

Throughout the two-year part-time/one-year full-time* program, participants will advance both their academic knowledge and their professional skills through collaboration with an array of community partners. The program’s array of academic, creative and professional activities will include guest lectures by established local and international scholars, practicing artists and arts administrators, art exhibitions, screenings and field visits especially arranged to enriching the participants’ exposure.

Application for the main round admission is open now. Our full teaching team and alumni look forward to seeing you and answering your questions at the HKU MCCC 2020 Information Talk!

*Full time mode: from September 2020; currently pending approval. See programme details for updates.
