Kuah Khun Eng received her B.A. from the University of Singapore and Ph.D in Anthropology from Monash University, Australia. Prior to the present position, she taught at the University of Melbourne and University of Hong Kong. She was a visiting professor at the University of Paris Diderot; a visiting scholar (1995-96) and a coordinate researcher (2009-10) at Harvard-Yenching Institute, Harvard University and a visiting fellow at Oxford University in June 2013.
She was former head of the Department of Sociology and honorary director of the Centre for Anthropological Research at the University of Hong Kong. She was past president of the Hong Kong Anthropological Association and academic advisor of the strategic advisory committee of the Hong Kong Observatory.
Currently, she serves as member of the international editorial board of Asian Anthropology and China Perspectives. She is also an EXCO member of the International Society for the Study of Chinese Overseas (ISSCO); and academic adviser to the Taichung Lechengong Organising Mazu Cultural Research Centre (台中樂成宮成立媽祖文化研究中心), Taiwan.
