The Sociology department, founded in 1967, has a long tradition in research and teaching about local cultures and societies. With the advent of large scale social transformations, this sociological lens on everyday life and cultures has broadened, framed within a global context.
Sociology provides students with critical analytical and methodological skills for understanding individuals and their connection to communities and societies, across a range of social indicators – class, crime, economy, education, gender, marriage and family, media, punishment, and religion. Its wide ranging course offerings allow students to examine a number of specialist areas related to discipline, including media and culture, anthropology and criminology.
