JUPAS Information Week – Department of Sociology Mock Lecture: Understanding Heritage from a Sociological Perspective

25 May 2023 at 8:00:00 am

Welcome to the world of Sociology! Sociology offers us a powerful and critical lens to make sense of different aspects of social life and interaction. Sociologists carry out investigations on a wide range of social phenomena and institutions such as family, gender, economy, and religion. Heritage is also a topic that we can approach from a sociological perspective.

In this talk, I will introduce how sociological insights can enrich and broaden our understanding of heritage. Far from being just some ‘old’ ‘things’, heritage plays important social roles like celebrating and sustaining our cultural identities. Also, the making of heritage involves dynamic social processes that involve different social actors at local, regional, and international levels.
