Creating an Art Ecology in Hong Kong: A Talk by Ellen Pau
8 October 2024
As part of the Media, Culture and Creative Cities Speaker Series, the Department of Sociology at The University of Hong Kong recently hosted a thought-provoking talk by Ellen Pau, a distinguished artist, curator, and researcher based in Hong Kong. Pau, known for her pioneering work in new media art and her contributions as a co-founder of Videotage and founding artistic director of the Microwave International New Media Arts Festival, shared her extensive experience and insights with an engaged audience.
During the talk, Pau delved into her artistic journey and her efforts to cultivate an ‘art ecology’ in Hong Kong. She emphasised the importance of community in the art world, advocating for the creation of new art spaces that foster collaboration and innovation. Pau’s vision extends beyond individual artistic practice to encompass a broader cultural and social ecosystem that supports and nurtures artistic expression.
One of the fascinating aspects of Pau’s presentation was how her professional background in radiography has influenced her artistic endeavours. The skills and appreciation for image production she developed in the medical field seamlessly transferred to her art, enriching her practice and offering a unique perspective on visual creation. This intersection of science and art is a testament to the multidisciplinary nature of contemporary artistic practices.
Pau also provided a critical overview of cultural policy development in Hong Kong, discussing its impact on the art scene. She highlighted both the challenges and opportunities that have arisen from these policies, offering a nuanced perspective on how regulatory frameworks shape artistic production and dissemination in the city.
A significant portion of the talk was dedicated to Pau’s reflections on new media art and its potential to innovate and intervene in societal discourses. She shared her thoughts on the transformative power of technology in art, suggesting that new media can offer fresh avenues for engagement and expression.
In a particularly enlightening segment, Pau discussed the conception and creation of her work ‘The Shape of Light,’ which was displayed on the façade of M+ in the West Kowloon Cultural District. She described the intricate process behind the artwork, from its initial inspiration to its realisation, and reflected on the significance of its public display in one of Hong Kong’s most prominent cultural landmarks.
The Media, Culture and Creative Cities Speaker Series continues to provide a platform for leading figures in the fields of media, culture, and creativity to share their knowledge and inspire students and professionals alike. Ellen Pau’s talk was a profound reminder of the vital role that art and community play in shaping our cultural landscapes.
