How Does the Disruptive Technological Innovation Affect Residents' Sense of Happiness? Evidence from China

(Prof. JIA Haiyan)

Happiness involves the pursuit of value, is an important measure of social stability and harmony, and is driven by technological progress and innovation. Disruptive technological innovation is usually accompanied by creative destruction, and the economic and social changes it triggers have a significant impact on residents' happiness. This article proposes a new, comprehensive theoretical framework, based on the Schumpeter growth paradigm and the dimensions of time and space. Based on China Family Panel Studies data and industrial enterprise data, unbalanced panel data were used to explore the impact of disruptive technological innovation on residents' happiness. The results are as follows. (1) Disruptive technological innovation significantly affects residents' sense of happiness, with a negative impact in the short term, but an increase in residents' sense of happiness in the long term. This result still holds after the endogeneity test and robustness testing. (2) In terms of the impact mechanism, in the short term, the income enhancing effect of disruptive technological innovation increases residents' sense of happiness, but cannot offset the loss of happiness caused by unemployment. In the long term, disruptive technological innovation enhances residents' sense of happiness by improving the level of economic development and the flexibility of their work. (3) In both the long and short term, sound employment and social security policies effectively alleviate the negative impact on residents' happiness caused by disruptive technological innovation. Based on these findings, some insights for policy implication are proposed.

A Study on the New Three-Generation Families and the "Elderly-Children Integrated" Family Support System amidst the Countercurrent of Modernization

(Prof. YAN Shaohua)

Against the backdrop of simultaneous population aging and declining birth rates, coupled with rapid transformations in family structures, traditional family functions are under strain. Multi-generational families, as intergenerationally integrated family organizations, have become key units in addressing the dual pressures of supporting the elderly and raising the young. This paper integrates various emerging forms of multi-generational families in both urban and rural areas and redefines the concept of the "new three-generation family." Macroscopically, such families represent a counter-trend to modernization and nuclearization, while microscopically, they are the outcome of descending familism. They differ from both traditional three-generation families and modern nuclear families in terms of living arrangements, division of labor, and resource flows. In terms of formation mechanisms, the new three-generation family is a product of families exercising agency in response to external pressures: on the one hand, insufficient state welfare provision and market pressures create a "money-time" dilemma; on the other hand, drawing on cultural capital rooted in Eastern traditions of "altruism" and the values of "new familism," families demonstrate remarkable resilience. Through a "pressure-resource-cognition-strategy" framework, they proactively integrate intergenerational resources to cope with these pressures. The future evolution of the new three-generation family entails both positive pathways, such as spatial expansion and technological empowerment, and structural challenges, including care responsibility deficits and the reallocation of family functions. Based on this analysis, the paper examines potential policy needs, emphasizing the synergistic combination of universal state institutional foundations and locally differentiated policy extensions. It proposes a community-embedded family support system that integrates elderly and child care from three dimensions: spatial adaptation, multi-agent collaboration, and technological empowerment, aiming to provide theoretical support and practical pathways for the transformation of China’s family policy system.
