Methods Hub Seminar: Solving for X: Generative AI, Student Behaviour, and the Evolution of Teaching

Friday, 27 March 2026 at 7:00:00 am UTC

This study explores university students’ attitudes and perceptions toward the use of generative AI tools—such as ChatGPT—in mathematics education and teaching more broadly. Conducted at a large, research-intensive UK university, the research aims to understand how students are adopting these tools and how their evolving behaviours are influencing teaching practices. As generative AI becomes embedded in everyday academic activity, educators face growing demand-pull pressures to adapt their methods—not to promote AI use uncritically, but to respond constructively to how students are already engaging with it. A central question is how these technologies impact students’ learning, particularly in subjects like mathematics that traditionally rely on process and method. This marks the first year of a longitudinal study tracking three student cohorts over the course of their degree programmes. By following patterns of engagement within and across cohorts, we aim to gain insights into the long-term pedagogical implications of generative AI in higher education.
