RAE Workshop: Some insights into RAE evaluations of research quality for Sociology

Professor Ng will share his experiences from participating in the last RAE, with a focus on what panelists look for when identifying world-leading and excellent scholarship. Although panelists come from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, certain recurrent themes emerge in their evaluations. Professor Ng will also discuss how different types of publications—books, book chapters, journal articles, and others—are assessed, and offer personal reflections on the interactional dynamics between international and domestic panelists. He will conclude by responding to questions from workshop participants.
About the Speaker:
Kwai Ng received his B.S. in journalism from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, his M.A. and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Chicago. Kwai Ng’s research interests are sociology of law, legal language, and social theory. He has conducted field research on the grassroots courts in China and the bilingual courtrooms in Hong Kong. He has recently completed a book manuscript on the Chinese courts.
