Theory and Practices in Sociological Inquiry: Conversations between Peking University and The University of Hong Kong

4 February 2025

Both Peking University (PKU) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have great traditions in sociology, and they share understandings of the discipline. In January 2024, sociologists from the two universities held their first joint academic conference and constructive discussion at HKU. To continue the in-depth exchange between the sociology departments of both universities and explore collaborative opportunities beneficial to faculty and students, a conference titled “Theory and Practices of Sociological Inquiry” was held on December 14 in Room 201, Science Building 5, Peking University. On that day, eight visiting colleagues from HKU engaged in academic sharing and dialogue with their PKU counterparts. Professor David Palmer (Zong Shuren), Department of Sociology, HKU, and Professor Qiu Zeqi, Department of Sociology, PKU, delivered keynote speeches respectively. In addition to discussing the challenges and opportunities faced by sociological theory, methods, and empirical research, this conference is also an attempt to explore cooperative research and establish a mechanism for mutual visits between faculty and students of both universities.
