Our department is thrilled to learn about the news that one of our distinguished alumni, Professor Diana Khor, will become the first foreign national president of Hosei University, Japan on 31st March 2025. She will also be the first Hong Kong-born person holding the highest position in a Japanese private university.
Professor Khor received her MA and PhD in Sociology from Stanford University. Before pursuing further graduate work in the United States, she wrote an MPhil thesis on “Employed Women in Hong Kong: Their Class and Gender Imageries”, and completed her undergraduate education, both at the Department of Sociology, University of Hong Kong. Her research interest is sociology, sexuality and gender studies. In recent years, she has been conducting research focusing on same-sex partnerships and family relationships in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.
Hosei University, founded in 1880, is the second law institute established in Japan and is the oldest private law institute in Japan. According to the Asahi Shimbun, Professor Khor aims to increase the ratio of women among the faculty members from its current 24 percent. She also intended to improve the university’s brand value, saying, “We have many excellent students and internationalization is progressing, but this is not known outside the university.”
