Professor Guy Abel’s new paper (co-authored with Guanghua Chi, Eugenia Giraudy, Mike Bailey, and Drew Johnston) “Measuring Global Migration Flows Using Online Data” has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2409418122). The study presents a method for estimating international migration using privacy-protected data from over three billion Facebook users, while correcting for biases inherent in social media usage. Covering 181 countries, the research provides estimates of monthly migration flows, revealing key trends such as a sharp decline during the COVID-19 pandemic and a tenfold increase in migration from Ukraine following the Russian invasion. The findings offer unprecedented insights for researchers and policymakers, and the data have been made publicly available to support researchers, policymakers, and humanitarian efforts.
