21 January 2026

We are proud to share that Professor Gordon Brett from the HKU Department of Sociology was recently featured in the American Sociological Association’s 'Sociology of Culture' newsletter (pg. 15-20). The interview with graduate student Yijie (Coco) Fang highlights Professor Brett’s research on culture, cognition, and creativity, blending theoretical insights with empirical case studies.

Professor Brett discusses his journey from studying culture and cognition at the University of Toronto to exploring how cognitive processes influence cultural action. His work emphasizes the importance of integrating individual cognition with social and institutional contexts, highlighting variation in automatic and deliberate processing.

Looking ahead, Professor Brett plans to publish articles on how physical venues shape improvisational creativity and continues to advocate for broad reading and methodological rigor among graduate students. His work exemplifies innovative, theory-driven research that deepens our understanding of cultural processes.
