Erkan Gursel is a full-time joint Ph.D. student at King's College London (KCL) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He received his B.A. and M.Sc. degrees from the University of London (SOAS and UCL, respectively) before completing an M.Phil. at the University of Cambridge as a member of Trinity Hall. His research focuses on the socio-political implications of carceral governance in the aftermath of large-scale disaster, taking the February 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes as a critical juncture in understanding the machinations of hazard-induced state violence in the 21st century. He is also interested in forced migration and diasporic identity formation, having previously conducted research on Arabic-speaking refugee communities in Istanbul and Turkish-speaking migrant communities in Berlin.
