The media has a significant impact on how people perceive crime and order in society. This course will delve into the ways in which the media shapes our attitudes and responses to crime. It will examine how different forms of news media represent crime and why they choose to portray it in certain ways. Furthermore, it will investigate the depiction of crime in popular culture and entertainment media. By doing so, students will develop a critical and questioning approach to analyzing how these representations influence society's understanding of crime.
Explain key concepts and theories on how media influences attitudes and responses to crime;
Identify how crimes are portrayed across different media formats;
Conduct independent research and develop a portfolio on a specific crime or deviance issue of your choice;
Design and carry out empirical research—covering research design, data collection, and analysis—to explore media portrayals of your chosen issue;
Critically assess media representations of your chosen issue and their impact on society’s perceptions of crime and crime control;
Synthesize insights and facilitate discussions on current topics related to the impact of new media technologies on your chosen crime or deviance issues.
