This course looks at the various ways of conducting research in the fields of media, culture and creative cities. It will provide an overview of the entire research process, such as the crafting of a research proposal, the preparations needed to apply for ethics review, the various research paradigms associated with conducting qualitative and quantitative research, the collection of data and reporting writing etc.
We will also focus on two research methods, in-depth interviewing and survey/questionnaire, to not only learn about how they are utilised in examining social phenomenon associated with the media and cultural industries (along with their products), but also acquire knowledge on their practical applications in the field and how the obtained data can be codified and analysed for report writing. The knowledge and skills obtained will contribute to the development of the Capstone Project.
Understand the process of research design: identifying and addressing research problems, formulating research questions and arguments, and collecting as well as analysing data.
Become familiar with 1 qualitative (in-depth interviews) and 1 quantitative (survey/questionnaire) research methods for data collection.
Synthesise theory with practice and acquire the tools in successfully developing a research study.
Work in teams to develop and carry out such research projects.
