Cantonese opera takes to social media

17 June 2022

A new Cantonese Opera Development Research Group exploring transformations in the tradition has launched social media channels to share findings with, and encourage discussion amongst the public.

The ‘Staging Cantonese Opera across Time and Place’ (講大戲) initiative is led by Dr Victor Shin with the assistance of HKU Sociology PhD Candidate Jackie Yuen, and Media, Culture and Creative Cities programme alumni Nadia Chu. It forms part of Dr Shin’s Hong Kong Research Grants Council funded project.

Dr Shin commented: “Cantonese opera is an important traditional culture of Hong Kong. It has been inscribed onto UNESCO’s representative list of the intangible cultural heritage of humanity in 2009. The Cantonese opera development research group will share our research findings in an effort to contribute to the development of Cantonese opera.”

Several channels are available for following the group’s work:

The group will be organising a series of events and inviting Cantonese opera practitioners to share their thoughts with society on different aspects of Cantonese opera.
